Scott Schreiner Golf Course Texas Kerrville

One of the most overlooked and underrated golf courses in the Hill Country…Scott Schreiner Golf Course in Kerrville.  Very little “Texas hospitality” while I was there, though.  More of a “what are you doing here?”-type attitude.  Shameful, but common in the golf business today.  At least at some of the public courses.

Mystery holes in Kerrville

Comanche Trace

Kerrville’s crown jewel of golf, Comanche Trace, designed by Austin’s Kite Bechtol Russell.  No clue as to which holes these are.  I’ve never played it.  Shot these from the road while killing time between shoots for Origin Homes.

Cordillera Ranch Sporting Clays

Here’s a new one from the sporting clays course at Cordillera Ranch.

Cordillera Ranch Hole 15 Boerne Texas Golf Hill Country

The 15th at Cordillera Ranch, just after sunrise.  The place is coming along quite nicely.  As bossman David Hill put it, “We’re now, for the first time, getting to play offense…” referring to the conditioning of the golf course, as compared with playing defense with last year’s drought during grow-in.

Canada and Texas

April 25, 2007

I wrote a couple of articles about Texas golf for Pacific Golf magazine and Alberta Golf magazine, two golf magazines published up in British Columbia.  Very nice folks up there in Canada.  You oughta see some of those courses up there on the western edge our neighbor to the north.  Wow.  Now that’s scenery.  Below are links to PDFs of the stories.  Enjoy.

Name That Hole

Want a hint?  No.  This is too easy.

Les Appelt 2003

Colovista creator Les Appelt has died.  I took this shot of him teeing off #1 back in 2003.  We played golf that day and afterwards had a big lunch of fresh tomatoes and french fries.  I really enjoyed being with Mr. Appelt.  And I still love playing Colovista.

Waterford Texas Hole 14

This is going to be a good par 3.  Although this photo does nothing to help anyone, allow me to break it down.

It’s downhill, which is always good when it comes to par 3’s. The grading (slope) of the green is really nice.  Props to Randy Russell.  Bluebonnets blanket the native areas left of the hole, just across that silt fence.  The tees look like a mogul run.  Yep, this is going to be a good golf course.

Blue Lake Hole 5

The 5th 4th green at Blue Lake looking out over Lake LBJ. I like this shot mostly for its conveyance of warmth, wind and humidity…the three usual suspects of Hill Country summer golf.

Why photography is so much like golf

Mount Bonnell

I took this photo of the Colorado River (aka Lake Austin) from atop Mount Bonnell ten years ago today with a disposable camera.  Thousands of dollars in equipment and film and travel and education and experimentation (not to mention the ten years) later, I’m not sure I’ve gotten any better.

Waterford Hole 11

A sneak peek at the green of the incredible par-4 11th at Waterford, perched above Lake Travis, just south of “The Narrows.”  Trust me…this hole is a beast.

Why I like unstable weather

Waterford Hole 3

Because it provides opportunities for shots like this.  I shot this one next to the ladies’ tee on the par-5 3rd hole at Waterford.

Waterford Hole 7

As far as I know, this is the first shot of the par-3 seventh at Waterford.  Bill Hanna (Keeper of the Green) said it looked better before the storm knocked all those leaves down and muddied up the fresh turf.  Maybe so, but it looked damn good to me.  I wish I’d had a 5-iron and a Pro-V1 instead of a Nikon and a tall whisky.  Kidding.  About the camera.

Hill Country Storm

So I was out at Waterford today.  Images to come.  But first, this thing chased me all the way back to Austin.  I stopped at a high point on Texas 71 and shot this looking north toward Lake Travis (that’s it there…the relative puddle being pounded by this awesome storm.)  The power and beauty of unstable weather.

And to think The Driskill was one of the bigger places a few years ago.  Can you find it here? Cash and prizes to those who can point out where Fosforus hangs its hat.  Man, there are a  bunch of cool places in this shot.
