The feel of ConCan

Concan Country Club Texas Golf Frio River Carlton Wade Photography Austin Bechtol Russell

The thing about ConCan Country Club is this.  The silence on the golf course is lunar.  Here’s a shot of the second tee at about 7:00am.  There’s nothing really special about this photograph, but it conveys an accurate feel of what the tee shots are like.  Peaceful, pretty, inviting and devoid of bull____.  Pretty much sums up the whole area out there.

Battle Lake Golf Course Texas Mart Waco Birdie Girls Carlton Wade

Only a few more weeks until Baylor starts classes again, which brings the annual disappointment of Battle Lake losing its “birdie girls.”  Get on out to Mart, and say hi to Chuck Higgins, owner of the place.  A good guy who knows his market.  Remember, he’s doing this in the buckle of the Bible Belt.  Assuming you’re the right demographic (and I figure if you clicked the link, you are), one summer afternoon of golf among pretty girls, barbeque smoke and traditional Texas country music will put you on Chuck’s client list forever.

Travis Heights Homes Austin Texas Noble Capital Carlton Wade

Travis Heights is one of the cool places to live in Austin.  This little cul-de-loop off Newning Drive looks like something stuck up in the woods along the Snake River in Wyoming.  Developed and financed by my pals at Noble Capital.  The good folks at Design&Rhetoric commissioned me to shoot this one, along with some others.

Name That Hole Carlton Wade Texas golf course

What a bad day to photograph a golf hole.  HDR makes up for it, though.  Sorry for the leaning flagstick.

So I peeked through the jigsaw cutout in the plywood construction fence today out at UT Golf Club.  Looks like it won’t be long now before you ‘Horns will be sippin’ in style.

texas golfer magazine

You know what they say: Don’t bite the hand that neglects to feed you.  Today, I bite.  Look at the above image.  The one on the left is a spot-on match of the July cover of Texas Golfer (whose site hasn’t been updated in three months).  The one on the right is the image I sold gave them.  What’s wrong, you ask?  Depth, clarity, contrast, color, saturation, hue, placement of type, fonts and flow.  That’s all.  ConCan deserves better.  So do I.  So do you.

Grasses

Thought some of you might like to know what kinds of grasses you’ll be playing on at Waterford.

Rain bomb

waterford texas golf third hole july 2007

Here’s another look from the third tee at Waterford just a few days after the rain bomb.  Sure, they got some washes around the course, but I was flat astonished by the way the whole thing handled a weather event big enough to capture the attention of national media.

Waterford Texas Hole 2

Does this look like a newly-grown-in golf hole after record rainfall?  Well, that’s what it is.  This is the 2nd hole at Waterford, shot today at 1:30pm.  Head pro Alan Wooley drove me around and showed me the damage resilience of this unbelievable new Bechtol-Russell design. They’ve recorded over 50 inches of rain so far in 2007 at Waterford.  (They got 20 of those in one night a few weeks back.)  All while trying to build the community and grow in the golf course.  Someone should give out an award for that.

Concan Golf

Another shot from ConCan Country Club.  These guys are playing to the 11th green.  I’m going back down there next week if anyone wants to tag along.

Red dragonfly

So I was a few miles from Waterford Texas today when this guy landed on my antenna.  I’m no entomologist, so this guy might be a girl.

Continental Club Austin Texas South Congress

I was digging around in the vault and found this one.  I understand longtime Continental Club Tuesday regular act Toni Price is moving to California.  Maybe she already has.  What a shame.  No, really.

Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course

Lady Bird Johnson died yesterday.  I didn’t know her, but I thought this might be an appropriate place and time to recognize the golf course named for her.  Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course is a great little course over in Fredericksburg.  Here’s a shot I took of it back in 1999, with a point-n-shoot Olympus somethingorother.  I really should go back and shoot it anew, now that I’ve ventured out past the auto setting.

Concan Hole 3

…or “vista,” as the creativity-challenged copy writers like to say.  Here’s a better overall shot from the third tee at CCC.

Concan Shinnecock

That’s what architect Roy Bechtol calls CCC.  It sure does have some aesthetic similarity.  This is another shot of the par-4 third hole.  Pick up a copy of this month’s Texas Golfer magazine.  CCC is the cover story.  My loyal blog readers won’t see any new photos, but you can read a nice piece by Carl Mickelson and a little more info about CCC from me.
