Whole Foods at night

February 28, 2009

whole-foods-austinI’m not a night person.  Energy is critical to mornings in parenthood, so late nights only make life tougher.  (I declined an offer to see The Gourds last night at Ruta Maya on South Congress for this very reason.)  But I’ve discovered something about grocery stores.  They turn into movie studios at night.  I think the pickins are better in the morning, but I might trade the best bananas and fresh ciabatta to stroll among Austin’s night people.  Beauiful, strange, tattoo’d, pierced, grotesque, half-dressed, smelly bad, smelly good.  They’re all there at night.  It’s a beautiful event.

Twitter is worth it, for no other reason than to get tweets from The Onion.

Darden Smith

February 23, 2009

darden_smithSo I went to a private dinner party over the weekend at a friend’s house, and the whole thing was so incredible, it was like something straight off the Food Channel or the Fine Living Network.  Linen, china, silver, candlelight, beef tenderloin, wine-infused pear balsamic greens, Knob Creek, beautiful people.  Then Darden Smith got up from his seat and played a dozen songs on two guitars and the old piano sitting there in the living room. It was just about the nicest evening I’ve spent in a long time.  Huge thanks to Mom of Three for putting this on and including us, and to Darden for the songs.

Tired and busy

February 22, 2009

I’ll post more in the coming weeks, if you care.  I’m just busy.  And tired.  I used to hate blogs.  Now I think I need them.  Mine and others’.  But I still hate them.  Good blogging is hard work, and bad blogging is a worthless waste of time.  So in the spirit of that, I’ll only post when I feel like sharing something cool.  Onward.  Gotta go manage my accounts over at Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.  Jeez.

So at the end of the show, Ryan threw me a guitar and helped me chord my way through one of his songs.  I’ve learned that the secret to playing in a band is to play softly so no one knows when you screw up.  Someone with an iPhone snapped this one off.

Tuning Fork

February 8, 2009

tuningfork6The first volume of Tuning Fork has come and gone.  Thanks to everyone for doing what you did:  Ryan Young, Taylor Vieger and Jason Lewis there, for your incredible music.  Eric Sutherland and the gang at Fosforus for the use of your space.  Patrick Spruiell for your help with setup and soundcheck.  And big thanks to everyone who came and feasted on brisket, chocolate, cheese, grapes, beer and wine.  Stay tuned for more pics, some vidclips and announcements on the next show.

Fire on Sixth Street

February 7, 2009

sixthstreetfireFor those who know and love Maggie Mae’s and the Blind Pig Pub, here’s a shot from yesterday morning, just after the AFD put out the flames.  Not sure how long these two Sixth Street staples will be out of commission.

Fosforus

February 3, 2009

keyholeA peek through the keyhole in the door to the studios at Fosforus.  We’re working on something pretty cool.  And it has nothing to do with that shot of the tea bottle.  Kidding.  Sort of.  That project is cool, too, but the one I’m talking about is big time.  Think:  meat, guitars, vodka, wine, candles, beautiful women and a 100-foot long table.

Name that beverage

bottlecap

I’ve been drinking this stuff for years and never knew about words of wisdom underneath the bottle cap.  Now I’m wondering how long they’ve been there.  Someone please tell me that it’s something new.  Also, in the spirit of the recent global obsession with my “Name That Hole” contests, I challenge you all to write in your best guess as to what’s printed on the other side of that cap there.  For you Aggies, that means I’m asking for the company name.
